While Grains of Paradise may be a mystery to many modern Americans, if this were 15th Century Europe, every cook would have this hot, peppery West African spice in her pantry, as actual peppercorns had not yet reached Europe from India. The grains are seeds harvested from the pods of beautiful, purple, trumpet-shaped flowers, Aframomum Melegueta, a member of the ginger family.
